Abstract

The expansion of the digital economy has fundamentally transformed the relationship between businesses and their stakeholders. Corporate activities are now continuously evaluated through social media platforms, online reviews, digital news channels, artificial intelligence systems, and publicly accessible corporate data. Although digital technologies provide organizations with unprecedented opportunities to communicate, innovate, and develop closer stakeholder relationships, they also expose businesses to ethical challenges involving personal data, algorithmic discrimination, cyber security, misinformation, employee conduct, and misleading digital communication. This article examines the relationship between business ethics and corporate reputation in the digital economy. It argues that ethical conduct is no longer limited to compliance with legal requirements or traditional corporate social responsibility programmes. Instead, ethics must be incorporated into the design, deployment, and governance of digital systems. Drawing on stakeholder theory, corporate reputation theory, legitimacy theory, and contemporary digital-ethics literature, the article explains how transparency, accountability, privacy protection, algorithmic fairness, cyber security, and responsible stakeholder engagement influence public trust. It further discusses how unethical digital practices can produce rapid and persistent reputational damage because information is distributed instantly across interconnected platforms. Five major areas are examined: the theoretical foundations of ethical reputation, ethical challenges created by digitalization, mechanisms connecting ethics with reputation, digital reputation risks, and strategies for ethical reputation management. The article concludes that organizations capable of embedding ethical principles into their digital strategies can strengthen stakeholder confidence, reduce reputational vulnerability, and create sustainable competitive advantage.
