Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital markets has transformed authenticity from a desirable brand characteristic into a strategic requirement for establishing long-term relationships with customers. Consumers now interact with organizations through websites, social media platforms, online marketplaces, mobile applications, influencer content, customer reviews, and virtual brand communities. These digital environments provide brands with valuable opportunities to communicate their values and engage their audiences, but they also expose inconsistencies between brand promises and actual organizational conduct. Consequently, consumers increasingly evaluate whether a brand appears truthful, transparent, reliable, original, socially responsible, and consistent with its declared identity. This evaluation creates perceived brand authenticity, which can strengthen customer trust, emotional attachment, satisfaction, identification, and loyalty. The present conceptual article examines the relationships among brand authenticity, customer loyalty, and electronic word-of-mouth. It argues that authenticity influences loyalty through interconnected cognitive, emotional, relational, and social mechanisms. Customers who perceive a brand as authentic are more likely to believe its claims, trust its intentions, feel emotionally connected to its identity, continue purchasing its products, resist competing alternatives, and recommend it to others. Customer loyalty subsequently becomes an important foundation for positive electronic word-of-mouth because loyal customers voluntarily communicate their experiences through ratings, reviews, social media posts, online discussions, videos, comments, recommendations, and brand-related content.
